Lampyris noctiluca veya Ateş böceği, Lampyris cinsine bağlı bir böcek türüdür.^[1] Dişiler biyolüminesans ile çiftleşmek için çekicilik sağlar. Işık parlaklığı erillere doğurganlıklarını göstermek için işaret görevi görür.^[2] Parlaklık yüksekliği daha çok ve büyük yumurta olduğundan, eriller genel olarak en parlak olana yönelim gösterirler. Bu sebepten ötürü, dişiler çiftleşmek için birbiri ile rekabet halinde olur.^[3]
